Metchosin is a small rural community of just over 5000 people in Greater Victoria region of British Columbia. It is part of Victoria’s Westshore region and the beginning of Vancouver Island’s wild west coast. Hobby farming is a popular activity in Metchosin, meaning it’s always easy to find fresh fruit and vegetables, and locally-sourced poultry and beef.
Metchosin prides itself as the only completely rural municipality in British Columbia. The community plan does not include urbanization, and instead focuses on preserving a way of life that has continued for 150 years. The municipality is debt-free and therefore better able to keep property taxes and rates low.
The community plan established a variety of 21/2- , five- and 10-acre lots. Subdivision was prohibited, and subsequent councils have made it stick. For this reason, Metchosin looks much the same as it did two decades ago while development has taken off in the surrounding communities.
Metchosin lies within Sooke School District (SD 62). There are two new high schools in the region (one in Langford, and one at the end of Veterans Memorial Parkway, in Colwood).
Royal Bay Secondary is a new high school built for the growing population in neighbouring Colwood.
Metchosin is located about thirty minutes by car from downtown Victoria. New transportation infrastructure is promising to make this commute even shorter.
